The Paradox of Reality vs. Fiction

We think that Médecins Sans Frontières is an organization that deserves our support. This group redefines courage with the way they address world horrors and human suffering. In an era when “courageous” is regularly used to describe a supermodel dealing with a nasty coke habit or a contestant on reality TV, the work of Doctors Without Borders reminds us just how insulated we are to true horror and human suffering in the world.
Is this depiction of horror and human suffering an effective means of advertising? We’re afraid the answer is no, accustomed as we are to trying to avoid recognizing the real atrocities of the world. We’ll even avoid reading fact-based depictions in books by Romeo Dallaire and Gil Courtemanche, but will, however, watch the movies. Seems that fictionalized horror is easier to take than reality.
